Concrete in Goddard, Kansas
Goddard has gone from a railroad farm town to a commuter suburb in a few decades. Its concrete reflects both: older drives near the original town, lots of newer subdivision work, and rural slabs on the acreages toward Lake Afton.

Railroad roots, suburban growth
Ezekiel Wilder founded Goddard in 1883 on the planned Santa Fe line about 10 miles west of Wichita, naming it for railway executive J. F. Goddard. The railroad and a post office arrived in 1884, and the town incorporated in 1910. An F4 tornado struck on June 23, 1969, injuring six with no deaths. As Wichita grew west, commuters transformed Goddard into a suburb. It sits on U.S. 54 at about 1,463 feet, and the 2020 census counted 5,084 residents and 1,757 housing units. Lake Afton Public Observatory is south of town, and Goddard USD 265 operates twelve schools (Wikipedia: Goddard, Kansas).
Wind on the west side
Open land west of Wichita means wind. NWS lists Wichita's average wind speed at about 11.5 mph (NWS Wichita, annual climate normals for Wichita, Salina and Chanute), and exposed lots on the edge of town often feel more. Wind dries fresh concrete fast. NRMCA's guidance on plastic shrinkage cracks explains they form when the surface dries before the concrete sets, and recommends windbreaks, fog sprays and covering the surface between finishing steps (NRMCA, CIP 5: Plastic Shrinkage Cracking). Its curing guidance adds that curing should begin right after finishing and continue for days (NRMCA, CIP 11: Curing In-Place Concrete).
Newer subdivisions
Goddard's newer neighborhoods mean many owners are adding concrete rather than replacing it: patio extensions, outdoor kitchen pads, a walk around the side of the house, or a pad for a trailer. Additions should be tied to existing slabs with planned joints. NRMCA recommends isolation joints where slabs meet fixed points such as foundations and existing slabs that should move independently (NRMCA, CIP 6: Joints in Concrete Slabs on Grade).
Older homes near the original town
Close to the tracks and the historic core, older homes have narrower drives, original walks and steps, and detached garages. Replacements here are more often about wear and settlement: scaled surfaces, broken panels, and steps pulling away from the porch.
Acreages toward Lake Afton
South of town toward Lake Afton, larger rural lots bring long drives, shop and garage slabs, and patios with open views. Rural sites have private lines such as well lines, buried power to outbuildings and septic fields that utility locates do not mark. Truck access across soft ground is another planning point.
Storm history
The 1969 tornado is part of local memory, and storm shelters and safe rooms are a consideration for some homeowners. Those are engineered structures with their own requirements, separate from flatwork; ask the city's building office about permits.

Neighboring areas
Maize is north, Cheney west along U.S. 54, Clearwater south, and Haysville southeast. West Wichita meets Goddard on the east.
Schools and growth
Goddard USD 265 runs a dozen schools in and around the city, and new neighborhoods keep filling in around them. Fresh lots mean freshly graded soil, and new slabs on recently placed fill benefit from careful compaction. If a newer driveway or patio has started to sink at one corner, lifting can help when the panel is intact.
See the estimate factors page for what shapes patio and pad scopes.

Concrete questions from Goddard
Is the Lake Afton area different for concrete?
Rural lots there mean longer drives, private utility lines and truck access to plan around. Soil and drainage vary, so a look at the USDA soil map and the site itself helps.
Why did my new Goddard patio get small surface cracks?
Often plastic shrinkage from wind and sun drying the surface before it set. They are usually shallow and cosmetic.
How do you pour concrete on windy days?
Windbreaks, fog sprays, evaporation retarders, covering between finishing steps and curing right after finishing.
Can I add a trailer pad next to my driveway?
Usually. It should be thick enough for the trailer and tied to the drive with planned joints. Check setbacks with the city.
Do I need a permit for a storm shelter slab?
Shelters are engineered structures with their own requirements. Ask Goddard’s building office before planning.
