A Santa Fe station town
Cheney was founded in August 1883, named for Benjamin P. Cheney, a Santa Fe stockholder, and served as a station and shipping point on the railroad's Wichita and Pratt division. Its first post office opened in September 1883. The city lies about 22 miles west of the outskirts of Wichita and covers about two square miles. The 2020 census counted 2,181 residents and 859 housing units, and Cheney State Park and Cheney Reservoir are nearby attractions (Wikipedia: Cheney, Kansas).
Boat, camper and RV pads
Being close to a large reservoir, many households own boats or campers, and parking them on grass leads to ruts. A concrete pad beside the garage or behind the house is a common request. Pads that carry trailers on small tongue wheels and jacks need enough thickness to resist point loads, and a sound base so the slab does not crack at the edge where wheels roll on. NRMCA's joint guidance recommends near-square panels and joints spaced no more than 24 to 36 times the thickness (NRMCA, CIP 6: Joints in Concrete Slabs on Grade).
Shops and storage buildings
Larger lots and rural properties around Cheney often have shops sized to hold a boat or camper. The overhead door apron is the hardest-working piece of concrete on those buildings. Consider how a trailer turns in and whether runoff from the roof lands on the apron.
In town
Cheney's older streets have public sidewalks, front steps and single- or two-car drives. Typical projects are replacing a cracked drive, rebuilding steps, or adding a small patio. Small-town schedules often mean grouping several small jobs together for one pour day.
Winter care far from the city
Rural roads around the reservoir get treated in winter, and slush tracked into driveways and garages carries road chemicals. NRMCA warns that magnesium-based salts used for pre-treating roads can be tracked onto driveways and garage slabs, and recommends hosing off salt deposits when conditions allow (NRMCA, CIP 2: Scaling Concrete Surfaces). K-State Research and Extension lists calcium chloride as its first pick among home ice melters (K-State Research and Extension, Choosing the Best Ice Melt Product).
Rain and scheduling
NOAA's Wichita normals show May as the wettest month at about 5.2 inches, with January the driest at under an inch (NOAA NCEI 1991–2020 monthly normals, Wichita Eisenhower airport station). Spring and early summer rains can push back pours; dry, mild weeks in early fall are a good time for patio and pad work before winter.

School district and small-town schedule
Cheney USD 268 operates three schools, and life in a town this size runs on a familiar calendar. Concrete work near schools, churches and the main street is easier to plan around events and busy days. Travel from the metro also means pour days get set with weather and distance in mind, so having the forms and base ready before the trucks roll matters.
See the estimate factors page for how travel distance, size and thickness can affect a scope.

Concrete questions from Cheney
Is there extra planning for concrete work this far from Wichita?
Mainly scheduling and access. Distance from the plant affects how pours are timed, so a site that is ready, with clear access, helps the day go smoothly.
How thick should a boat or RV pad be?
Thick enough for the trailer’s weight and point loads from jacks and tongue wheels. Get thickness, base and reinforcement in writing for your trailer.
Does road salt damage my garage floor?
Tracked slush carries road chemicals. NRMCA warns about magnesium-based salts and suggests hosing off deposits when conditions allow.
When is the best time for a patio in Cheney?
Mild, drier weeks in early fall are a favorite. Spring works too, with more rain delays.
Can several small jobs be done together?
Often, yes. Grouping a walk, steps and a pad can make one pour day more efficient.
